Post-Diploma – 3rd Cycle
Design & Research
The Post-Diploma Design and Research of the saint-Etienne Higher School of Art and Design is based on a broad and diversified vision of design, a sphere for project experimentation and elaboration, operating both as a creative laboratory and an incubator of projects. In whatever field of design the research is developed (be it object design, products or services, graphic, digital or sound design), it is considered as an activating tool of modification and transformation of the real world; and the designer as a vector for questioning our ways of life and our relationship with objects, signs and the contemporary environment -someone to identify the changes in today’s world, but also to be an actor of this change.

The research students are required to develop an agreed theme orientated project, through to a level of formalization which allows them to undertake its production, distribution and communication in optimum conditions, and also to participate in the elaboration and compilation of the review Azimuts.

The review Azimuts could by itself be considered the subject of a research project; it constitutes a field of graphical experimentation, a forum of reflection and research, and a communication support for the projects. The name Azimuts (“in all directions”) signifies a broad, unlimited and diversified approach to design. It is concerned not only with the historical and theoretical aspects of all fields of design, but also with the phases of a design process: the research and conception, the production, and the distribution. The review does not seek to comment on current trends, but to reveal the essential issues of design and to open up debate. Issued on a bi-annual basis, with 3,000 copies distributed internationally, it retains a unique position amongst contemporary design reviews.

The research students will receive a grant of €4,000/ year in 2010; will have access to a dedicated workplace, and can count on the support of three permanent staff supervisors, with outside help available depending on the specific needs of the project. They will also have access to all the material and human resources of the School.

The promotion and distribution of the projects are undertaken by the Review Azimuts, and by various additional operations depending on the project specificity.

The Post-Diploma Research and Design course offers a one year course of excellence open to graduates and young designers and researchers, both national and international, coming from all fields of design and research in design. Places available are restricted to 12.
